Allan is available to do readings and writing workshops for both adults and young people. A former Head of Drama at the Etobicoke School of the Arts, he is also in great demand as an adjudicator for community theaters.
Allan has presented at libraries, high schools, colleges and universities throughout Canada, the United States and Germany. He has also addressed delegates at the ALA/YALSA convention in Chicago, on the occasion of winning the Printz Honour Book for "Chanda's Secrets"; at the African Studies Association convention in Washington, on the occasion of winning the Children's Africana Best Book for the Older Reader; and at the International Readers Association convention in San Antonio.
Comfortable working with young people in both small class settings and full-scale assemblies, he is also equally at ease with both academic achievers and kids at-risk: one of his favorite readings was with teens at a lock-down facility in Michigan.
Allan's typical presentation includes a combination of dramatic readings from his work -- he began his career as an actor, and is extremely animated -- interspersed with open-ended Question and Answer sessions. However, he is open to working with his hosts to create unique presentations geared to specific needs. For instance, he has been a featured animator at literacy assemblies; has focused presentations on issues raised by his work (i.e. HIV/AIDS, safe sex, teen date rape); and has done writing seminars and workshops that use improvisational drama techniques to get would-be writers thinking inside the heads of their characters.
Lively and engaged, Allan brings teaching and theatre skills to all of his events. To enquire about a visit please contact Allan.
